The New South End: discover this unique new residential area
An ultra-modern new city district is growing on the sites of the former Antwerp South freight station. We start with a view of the old South End, which originated in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 21st century, they also started from scratch, on a 20-hectare site, to build an ultramodern new district. Now the emphasis is mainly on sustainable and ecologically sound urbanist principles and building techniques. Come and explore this district and walk with us from "old new" to "new new" and from the 19th century to the 21st century.
During this walk, feast your eyes and get to know this unique and revolutionary new Antwerp residential area. Discover the sustainable, energy- and water-saving principles and admire the modern architecture by internationally renowned architects. You will gain insight into the history of the old South district, the Southern Dockx and Antwerp South railway station. We also walk through the reception hall of J. van Breda Bank, the beautifully restored ticket office hall of the former freight station.
At the quays, you will learn more about the Sigma Plan, the redevelopment of the quays and the new Park South. In the heat plant you will have a view of the technical room and get an explanation of the special heating system. We can end on the hill at the heat tower with a view of the "great connection" to the Ring Park South.
