The Art Nouveau trail. Along the railway.
In 2023, it was 130 years since Art Nouveau made its appearance in our country, more specifically in Brussels. Brussels architects such as Horta, Hankar and Van de Velde were at the cradle of this innovative architectural style, which would soon be imitated in several other European cities. In Antwerp too, this new style was introduced by local architects, albeit a few years later and somewhat more cautiously.
Some Antwerp architects contributed original ideas, others gleaned their inspiration from Brussels colleagues and gradually developed their own style.
Best known for its Art-Nouveau buildings is the southern part of the Zurenborg district, between Berchem station and Antwerp Central Station. But this frivolous architecture has also left gems elsewhere in the city. In this walk we discover quite a few of them located on both sides of the Antwerp - Mechelen railroad line.
