On Friday, Oct. 13, 1944, a V-bomb fell on the city of Antwerp in Schildersstraat near the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. An entire block of houses was destroyed and 32 people were killed. This bomb was the first of many.
Until March 1945, a total of 857 V-bombs fell on Antwerp and 1,327 in the Antwerp district. The importance of its port made Antwerp the main target for German V-bombs at the end of World War II. The toll on the citizens was heavy: 4,500 killed, 7,000 wounded and 50,000 homes destroyed.
Through monuments, plaques and visual relics, your city guide will tell you the story of this sad period during the V-bomb walk.
