The trendsetting Zuid: Belle Époque and modern hotspots
At the end of the nineteenth century, the city government developed a new district south of the old city centre. It became a belle époque district with both sturdy harbour docks and elegant streets and wide avenues lined with important public buildings. After a more difficult period, this district is now experiencing a second youth. With its trendy image, the Zuid is now even internationally known as one of the hotspots of the lifestyle and fashion city of Antwerp.
The Fotomuseum (Museum of Photography), the Zuiderpershuis, the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (MUHKA), the better art galleries, hip restaurants and fashionable concept stores in converted warehouses are sure to please culture freaks and trendsetters.
Your guide uses the star-shaped street pattern as a compass to unravel the history of this neighbourhood with Parisian allure. The beautiful, wide streets end in squares with statues and fountains. The most imposing buildings on your route are the majestic Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) and the somewhat futuristic-looking new courthouse. Also striking are the maritime references in architectural details and numerous monuments. Either way, the Zuid will surprise you.
