The Eilandje: spectacular urban renewal
North of the Skippers' Quarter, the old harbour district the Eilandje has emerged as a trendy neighbourhood.
Young and old visitors alike are therefore pleasantly surprised by the combination of old and new elements in the neighbourhood. This lively 19th-century harbour district fell into disrepair in the 1960s. A spectacular urban renewal process transformed the less attractive harbour district into an attractive neighbourhood with promenades, terraces, greenery and some cultural gems.
During the walk 'Het Eilandje' you will stroll through this pleasant oasis. Between the historic warehouses you will discover the modern architecture of the MAS, the Red Star Line Museum and the new Port House. At an incredible pace, new buildings such as a hospital, a high school, student accomodation and housing estates have sprung up here. In addition, new bridges and squares were constructed. Thus, the Cadix district is currently undergoing a metamorphosis. The "Het Eilandje" walk is a true voyage of discovery.
