The working-class St. Andrew's District was nicknamed the "Parish of Misery". Social abuses and poverty prevailed here well into the twentieth century. However, this was not always so. Until the end of the eighteenth century, the illustrious St. Michael's Abbey hosted all the distinguished guests who visited Antwerp. Moreover, the art treasures of St. Andrew's Church betray that wealthier people once lived here as well. Today, St. Andrew's District has become a mecca for fashionistas and antique hunters.
This former poor neighbourhood was given a trendy look in recent years, but also managed to retain the atmosphere of a quiet village in the warm working-class heart of the historic city.
Additional information:
- It is best to choose a time when the beautiful parish church can also be visited:
Mon. - Sat.: 9 a.m. to noon
+ from April 1 until Oct. 31: Mon. - Sun: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. - On Friday mornings, of course, you'll also stop by the "sale by higher bid" of second-hand items at Vrijdagmarkt (Friday Market). Don't miss this opportunity.
