Coach Tour of Antwerp harbour: discover Europe's second largest port
There are three versions of the port tours:
An initial introduction takes 2 hours. If you want to discover the port of Antwerp in a different way, 3-hour and 4-hour port tours are also available (see below).
Port tour 2 hours:
A first taste of the country's largest economic cluster!
During this coach tour, you will be immersed in this fascinating maritime world, which seeks a balance between people, climate and economy. Here, Europe's largest petrochemical site and the refineries' cluster present a major challenge.
You also get a whiff of history: how did a mooring place on the Scheldt grow into the 2nd largest port in Europe? Your guide will tell you the fascinating stories of the Napoleonic docks, the migrants of the Red Star Line, the Antwerp nations and the silent witnesses of the vanished polder villages. Moreover, your guide will also discuss the expansion plans of the port and the deepening of the Scheldt.
Just north of the city, you get information on a string of warehouses, terminals, bridges, docks, locks and industry that reach to the border with the Netherlands.
During the tour of the dock harbour, visitors, traffic permitting, will be introduced to the largest locks on the right bank, the Berendrecht and Zandvliet locks.
This tour is limited to the right bank only
Want to discover the port of Antwerp in a different way? Port tours of 3 hours and 4 hours are also available (see below)
Port tour 3 hours (add extra hour):
This 3-hour visit can add fascinating elements to the initial introduction.
If possible, a brief stop will be made at Lillo fortress, from which visitors will have a nice view of Deurganck dock, located on the left bank: perhaps visitors will spot "a cathedral of the sea"!
In consultation with the port guide, a stop will also be made at the head of Deurganck dock, on the Left Bank: from here, visitors will enjoy a magnificent view of the harbour installations in full activity: downright impressive. Kieldrecht lock - the largest in the world - must not be missed!
Port tour 4 hours (add two hours):
Other aspects of the port may be covered during a 4-hour visit.
Now, by all means, both banks are visited: in addition to the petrochemical cluster on the right bank, a visit and stop at Deurganck dock and Kieldrecht lock on the left bank is invariably on the program!
In consultation with the guide, the polder village of Doel can be visited, whose survival is linked to the port expansion.
Antwerp-Stone terminal, Euroterminal, Katoennatie and other companies pass by, or do visitors prefer a stop at the Prosper and Hedwigepolder?
