How did Antwerp experience the "Great War"?
At the beginning of World War I In 1914, Belgium was governed from Antwerp for two months, until the moment that even the imposing defensive belt proved unable to withstand the German onslaught. For four years Antwerp was an "Occupied City".
We begin the walk Antwerp in the "Great War" at the Stadsfeestzaal on the Meir. From there we walk in the direction of Steenplein. Along the way, your guide will draw your attention to historic buildings (or the place where they stood) that played a role during the First World War.
Other aspects are also covered such as the attitude of the "Antwerp" Germans, important Antwerp aviation pioneers, famous writers and artists who lived through the war in Antwerp, and the refugee issue.
